Useful information in cold weather

Only travel if your journey is necessary - maybe use public transport to get to your destination?

Listen to local radio or television & check the internet for the latest weather and travel information

When driving in snow or icy conditions, slow down and ensure your stopping distance is suitable for the traffic speed and weather conditions. Avoid harsh braking or sudden manoeuvres as these could cause loss of control

Allow a lot more time for your journey

You will need more tyre tread in wet or icy conditions. Ensure that your tyres are inflated to the manufacturers’ recommended pressures and have at least 3mm of tread depth

Check your lights work correctly & are clean & use dipped headlights if driving while it's snowing

Check your battery is in good working order

Ensure your windows and mirrors are free from snow, frost and ice before you set off on your journey. Use a good de-icer in your windscreen washer fluid and check the levels frequently

Make sure your wiper blades are not worn, so you can keep your windscreen as clean as possible, and remove any snow that might fall off into the path of other road users

If going on a long journey take a shovel, torch, Wellington boots, warm clothing, food and a hot drink

If you do break down try and get your car to a safe place off the main road. If this isn't possible or if you get stuck in snow, it may be safer to leave your vehicle. If so, stand a safe distance away, but make sure that you are visible to other road users whilst waiting for assistance. If possible keep your sidelights on if it is dark or if the visibility is poor and do not stand (or let anybody else stand) between your vehicle and oncoming traffic.
